There are several reasons why you may want to monitor your own blood pressure. Your doctor may recommend you keep a record of your reading between doctor visits if you have high blood pressure, you are on blood pressure medication, or your numbers are hard to control. Whatever the reason lets first review what the numbers mean. Blood pressure is measured with two numbers such as 120 over 80. The first number is your Systolic, which is the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The second number is your Diastolic, which is the pressure in your arteries between heartbeats. If your numbers are 120 over 80 or less you are considered to be normal. If your reading is between 120 and 139 over 80 and 89 you are Pre-hypertension. Stage 1 Hypertension is if your readings are between 140 and 159 over 90 and 99. Now if your reading is 160 over 100 or higher your are considered Stage 2 Hypertension.

Now that you have a basic understanding of what the numbers mean, lets get starting taking your blood pressure based on your doctors’ recommendations. Your doctor may ask you to take a reading once a day, if so you want to do it around the same time each day. This is a good way for your doctor to track how your numbers change from day to day. In other cases your doctor may want to see how your pressure changes throughout the day so he may ask you to take two or three reading each day, in either case you will have a record of how your pressure changes for day to day or even for hour to hour. When you take your blood pressure you are going to want to record the numbers, the date, the time of each reading, and you may even make a notation if you were relaxed or nervous at the time. This information will be helpful and will give your doctor a good idea of your blood pressure changes, which he will be able to better treat your individual condition.

Taking your blood pressure is easy and the steps are similar whether you have a manual inflating or self inflation monitor. Before taking a reading you want to relax and sit in a comfortable environment for five to ten minutes. Try to refrain from moving or talking. If you have consumed any caffeinated beverage you should wait 30 to 45 minutes before taking a reading. For consistency, try to take your blood pressure using the same arm and taking it around the same time each day. Before placing the cuff on your arm make sure you are not wearing a thick coat or sweater for that will affect your reading. Roll up any long sleeved shirt making sure it is not constricting circulation to your arm. In most cases you will slide your arm through the cuff loop. The cuff should be positioned on your bicep about a 1/2 inch above the elbow. With your palm facing up place your arm on a flat table, the censer of the cuff should be in the center of your arm over the brachial artery. Secure the cuff around your arm using the Velcro so it fits securely but you should be able to still place 2 fingers between the cuff and your arm. While seating comfortably with both feet flat on the floor and you arm resting on a table inflate the cuff. With most monitors you start by pressing the Start button and once the inflate symbol comes on you pump up the cuff until a beeps sounds. On a self inflating monitor this will be done for once you push the Start button. Sit still, do not move or talk while waiting for the monitor complete the reading. The cuff will deflate as it is taking a reading, however on the manual inflate model once the reading is complete there may be a beep and a symbol will appear indicating you to depress the knob to release any remaining trapped air. Your blood pressure and pulse measurement will be displayed on the digital panel. You can now turn off the monitor or most monitors will turn off by themselves after about one minute.
